I am delighted to announce that I have been granted funding, from The Arts Council of Wales, for my residency in Iceland, this September.
The funding will help me to develop my weaving skills at The Icelandic Textile Centre in Blondous in the north west of Iceland. The centre encourages collaboration, education, research and innovation in the field of textiles, textile art and design. The residency seeks to promote an atmosphere of creativity, experimentation and reflection for artists from all over the globe
Residency Plans
The Arts Council of Wales grant will give me the opportunity to develop and expand my weaving skills in a supportive and encouraging enviroment at The Icelandic Textile Centre. I will have the opportunity to work alongside, and share practices with other international textile artists.
I am excited to have the opportunity to take in the wonderous landscape, that Iceland is famous for. I will do this through photos, video and drawings. I then hope to dye yarns with sustainalby sourced dyes stuffs and incorporate these yarns into my weavings. I am looking forward to working on a larger and more complicated loom. I already have plenty of ideas running around in my head!
The Next Few Months
The next few months are important in terms of my preparation for my residency, I am developing ideas around how to incoroprate the feel of the landscape into my woven pieces. I am currently experiementing with pattern, texture, yarn dyeing and I am also considering how to present my work.
I have plenty of organising to do including choosing and morndanting my yarns so they are ready for dyeing when I arrive in Iceland. I am beginning to sort how I will record my experiences whether through digital media, drawings, written work etc.
I have also been lucky to be in contact with a number of people who have been helpful to me here at home, or may be helpful when I get to Iceland. Thank you.
Thank you too, for reading so far. If you would like to keep up to date with my Icelandic textile adventure then keep an eye on my blog here, or you will find me on Instagram @hillandloom
